my first hand Made Baby blanket?

well the title says it. i just finished my first cross stitch baby blanket. but i want to put a back on it and know only the very basics about sewing. when i edge my product with another fabric does it have to be a certian type of fabric?
Is there a product out there made for baby blanket edges?
im not very good at sewing i mae my nephew a tooth when his first fell out and that took me hours!
if you could could you help by linking sites where i am able to get step by step of how to properly back a blanket and edge it off.
it took me almost a year to cross stitch this blanket and i do not want to ruin it by jumping before i know what i am going to do.

That is so lovely that you cross stitched it. I would recommend you take the blanket to your local fabric store and ask their expert advice. They will ooh and ahh over your work and point you in the right direction. Generally, you would want to back it with something with similar characteristics to what the top is made of so that shrinkage, etc., is the same. You would want to prewash whatever you choose. There is fabric that is rated for children’s pajamas, etc., that is flame retardent.

There are different types of edging that you can buy in packages, like bias fold tapes. There is something called ‘blanket edging’ which is a satiny, slippery type of edging. It is the kind of edge that kids like to hold between their fingers when they fall asleep. At the fabric store they can show you how to attach it, and I think the package comes with directions. Probably, all you need to do is layer the top over the backing, stitch the edges together then attach the edging.
